Klatch Coffee – Original Christmas Coffee Review (2018)

I visited Klatch Coffee in Redondo Beach, CA not too long ago, but ironically didn’t buy any coffee. At the time, my wife and our friend wanted a pick-me-up, but I decided to forego coffee that afternoon.

That was probably a mistake.

Klatch has made a pretty big name for itself in Specialty Coffee, with accolades like micro-roaster of the year (Roast Magazine) and the World’s Best Espresso back in 2007 at the World Barista Championship in Japan.

At the time of my visit, one of the baristas was passionately pitching me on a Panamanian Geisha he claimed was “ferment processed” (did he mean natural?) and a winner in the recent WBC. 

The cost?

$18 a cup…

I opted out and carried on with my day. I tried my wife’s coffee, it was indeed, delicious.

When I returned to San Francisco I had an impending delivery from Mistobox. And waddaya know…it was coming from Klatch Coffee.

Brandywine Coffee Roasters – Cumbres de Poas Coffee Review (2018)

Today’s review is another delicious single-origin coffee that arrived courtesy of my Mistobox subscription. It’s Brandywine Coffee Roaster’s Dona Francisca & Oscar Chacon Cumbres de Poás Red Honey.

There’s a lot to uncover in that lengthy name, so let’s break it down:

Dona Francisca and Oscar Chacon grew and processed the coffeeCumbres de Poás roughly translates to “The Summit of Poás” (Poás likely refers to the Costa Rican volcano of the same name)”Red Honey” refers to the red honey process that was used to produce this coffee

As you can probably guess from the cumbres de Poas part of the name, this coffee comes from Costa Rica, specifically the Central Valley region, where it was grown at 1500 masl.

And guess what? The Cumbres de Poas is one of my candidates for 2018’s best coffee.

Coffee should be for everyone, regardless of gender or ethnicity. But the industry is traditionally dominated by men. That’s changing – for example, 2018 saw us celebrate the first female World Barista Champion, Agnieszka Rojewska – but there are still barriers to women looking to make a career in coffee.

There’s a lack of firm data on women’s roles throughout the supply chain. But even without the numbers, it’s clear that men take the lead in many areas. Coffee roasting is one role that is traditionally filled by men.

However, some women are taking the roastery into their own, very capable hands – but not without obstacles. Read on to find out more about women in coffee roasting in their own words.

Best Coffee of 2018

It’s that time again! My annual look back at the best (really, just my favorite) coffees of 2018.

I only published 13 new whole bean coffee reviews this year. By comparison, in 2017 I posted 14 whole bean coffee reviews, so to not have delivered more reviews this year is definitely disappointing.

The good news is that most of the coffee I reviewed in 2018 was really good.

There were even a few coffee reviews I never got around to publishing that you might find on this list.
